Statistics suggest 88% of businesses DO NOT backup their computer data at the end of the working day. 63% only backup occasionally and about 37% NEVER backup their computer data.
Data stored on a computer / computers is a business asset and should be looked after by backing it up every day and storing the backed up data off site.
Personal Computer Users
Statistics suggest 91% of people who use a computer at home for personal use NEVER backup their data.
Are you aware every person who use a Computer or Laptop create about 2000 hours of data every year.
Multiply that by the number of employees you have.
Multiplied by their hourly rate.
12 months, 3 years, 7 years later forgetting theft of the computers what if a virus or a power serge destroys one or a number of your computer's hard drives what is going to happen to your business.
All because you were too lazy to back up your data on a daily or at least a weekly basis and secure your backed up data in a secure location off site.
Lets say you use your computer at home to:
Un-like a business that the likely scenario is their business will close and the owner goes bankrupt this won't happen to a home computer user but think about it...
If your computer's hard drive was damaged beyond repair and you lost your family photo's, music collect and other data it may not be a financial loss but it would be devastating loss for you and no doubt your whole family.
No matter how many employees or computers you have YOUR BUSINESS MUST have a written procedure stating:
There is no point backing up your valuable data then leaving it on the desk next to the computer or computers or place the backed up data in an un-locked drawer near the computer / computers. This is foolish but countless numbers of business owners allow their employees to do both.
Note: The following also includes a sole business who has a home office.
If you have used a computer for a while you have no doubt been told:
Never leave your backup data in the same room as your computer, the reasons are obvious.
A sole business should have a written backup procedure similar as stated above under Business Owners although it will be different it is important you backup your data regularly and the period of time is the home computer users decision but new data should be backed up at least once a week but preferably every day or every other day.
A word of advice...
A home computer user may have a lot of data eg. pictures, music but do not create a lot of data every day therefore the best backup procedure will be to make a complete backup then every two, three or four weeks make another complete backup. Then after a period of time get the first backup and over write it. This method you are not just backing up individual files you have two or three complete backups.
Note: The following refers to both business owners, home computer users and sole businesses who have a home office.
You have made the decision to regularly backup your data, that is the first step now you must decide where to keep and protect your valuable backed up data.
Up to 1993 you only had a few choices, the first two are bad ideas and the third would cost a lot of money, for a home user very inconvenient, they are:
Because up until 1993 the only option to secure backed up data securely was in a Metal Safe specifically made for data as a normal Metal Safe can cause magnetism inside the Safe which in turn will destroy your data.
Data Security Safe is made from Lexan Polycarbonate and designed in two parts:
